Durban – The uMkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), one of former President Jacob Zuma’s staunch supporters, warned the Zondo commission that arresting the retired statesman would spark a crisis.
In a statement released Monday, following its national executive committee meeting on Friday, the association warned the commission’s chairman, Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo, “not to continue on the dangerous path on which it has embarked. ”.
This was in reaction to Zondo scowling at Zuma for retiring from the state capture commission on November 19. That was after Zondo turned down a request from Zuma and his attorneys to step aside.
The association claimed that Zondo’s hand in the Zuma affair was forced.
“The MKMVA NEC has also noted with deep concern the very reckless decision of Vice President of the Supreme Court Raymond Zondo to bring legal charges against President Jacob Zuma, after his High Council, attorney Muzi Sikhakhane, informed the Vice President of the Supreme Court that President Zuma will apologize. We are aware that Supreme Court Vice President Zondo came under heavy pressure from various foreign-funded NGOs and other reactionary forces who advised him to take this ill-advised step that may lead to the arrest of President Zuma.
“We have also noted that several of these same reactionary forces, and many in the mainstream White Monopoly Capital (WMC) media, have been pushing for exactly that arrest to take place. While MKMVA respects the Commission of Inquiry on the Capture of the State, we would like to advise Deputy Judge Zondo that he will do well not to continue on the dangerous path on which he has embarked, ”he said.
The association claimed that the majority of South Africans did not want Zuma arrested.
“It must be clearly understood that MKMVA, and a large part of the South African population, will not like being arrested. If the State Capture Investigative Commission persists with an arrest warrant – and a subsequent arrest – a situation will be created that neither the commission nor anyone else will be able to control, ”the association added in its statement.
On internal ANC affairs, he said it was justified by legal advice provided to the ruling party’s top six by defender Gcina Malindi that members facing charges and have not yet been convicted cannot be forced to stand aside. .
“At all times we have held the opinion that neither in terms of the ANC Constitution nor the Constitution of our country do such powers exist, and that the constitutional maxim that every citizen is considered innocent must prevail until proven guilty in a court of law. Justice.
“The MKMVA NEC feels justified that this view was confirmed by the High Council (sic). For the sake of unity in the ANC, we sincerely appeal to all members of the NEC not to try to push this deeply divisive issue any further and to allow themselves to be led by the legal advice (sic) they have received. ”
