A Limpopo ANC councilor, who was arrested and charged with violating the Disaster Management Act after hosting an alcohol-filled party during the lockdown, is now wanted after she was involved in a serious car accident while allegedly drinking and driving. .

His second arrest during the period of lockdown has prompted calls for his removal from opposition parties in Limpopo.

Makhado Township Councilor Tebogo Mamarobela was arrested for driving while intoxicated in the early hours of Sunday morning, after she allegedly crashed her luxurious bakkie into a fence and other vehicles on the road.

The Citizen understands that Mamarobela was warned to appear in court on Monday, but apparently did not appear on her case.

In April this year, criminal charges were brought against her for violating lockdown regulations, after it was discovered that he had organized a birthday party for her, where she was allegedly publicly drinking alcohol with friends and colleagues.

Photos of his party were posted on social media, despite the blocking regulations put in place by President Cyril Ramaphosa in March this year.

She appeared in court and was released on bail of 1,000 rand. The case is still pending. At the time of the incident, a special council from the Makhado municipality suspended her from the council, pending the hearing of the ethics committee. She was also suspended from the Brand South Africa Board of Directors pending the outcome of an investigation into her possible misconduct.

On Tuesday, the Democratic Alliance said it was preparing a letter to the chairman of the Makhado Municipality Ethics Committee to request that the Mamarobela hearing be expedited so that she can be permanently removed from office.

“The people of Makhado deserve councilors who abide by the law and set a good example, not a serial offender who, while on bail, commits a similar crime,” said the leader of the DA committee in Makhado municipality. , Cllr Brian Du Plooy in a statement.

Makhado Municipality Mayor Samuel Munyai said the municipality had officially sanctioned investigations into the councilman’s conduct.

“If it is found that the councilor has indeed violated her code of conduct, we will bring her before the disciplinary hearing and inform the MEC for cooperative governance, Basikop Makamu, to act in accordance with the recommendations of the disciplinary committee.

In response to a request for comment, Mamorobela objected to suggestions that he may have been under the influence during Sunday’s accident, saying he was at home, “treating my injuries.”

She said “” It hurts so much that all of you in the media call me and start asking questions about the accident. This is because instead of asking me how I feel, you want to know if I was drunk and driving or if I evaded going to court to answer about the accident. An accident is exactly that, an accident. It can happen to anyone. But what I can assure you is that she was not drunk during the accident. That is why I am here at home, healing my wounds, “said the councilor.

Then he changed tactics and said: “Let me say, without comment because I know that you journalists, when we say this, go and write something else to sell your newspapers,” said the councilor before hanging up.
