  • It says that the SIUs are in the province and will be compiling an investigation for its implementation.
  • It also says that Covid-19 hospital admissions are declining.

Eastern Cape Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane said Tuesday that those involved in Covid-19 corruption must face the full power of the law.

He also said that investigating agencies must arrest to prosecute, and not arrest to investigate.

“We have asked law enforcement to arrest for prosecution, not arrest to investigate. This creates a dark cloud that makes people feel like something is not right. If it gets to the point of arrest, arrest to prosecute, then you don’t wait months. and months to investigate. “

He spoke during a Covid-19 update in the province, where the numbers have started to slowly decline.

Mabuyane said the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was “in fact in the province.”

“We are waiting for the SIU to give us final reports in the areas where they are [investigating]Therefore, we cannot comment on something we do not have. We are waiting in advance; Our thing is to implement that report, which we will do without fear or favor, “he said.

He said lifestyle audits were underway.

“All MECs signed consent letters and asked the responsible government agency to examine it.”

Mabuyane said that those in public office must know that they cannot use the government for their private enrichment.

Whatever you do, you will be responsible to the people of this country. We appeal to everyone, do not do something for yourself or your friends. Do something that impacts people.

But, he added, proper investigations must be conducted.

“We will not jump out throwing tantrums and following perceived corruption. Due process must be followed. This [SIU investigation] it is the due diligence that we are committed to. When there is something to answer for, you must open your heart and mind and respond. It is intended for the public purse. ”

Mabuyane said he would tackle corruption head-on.

“We are not going to bury our heads in the sand when it comes to corruption. We are going to confront it.”

Covid-19 details

Reporting on Covid-19 in the province, Mabuyane said that reports by some media outlets that there were no spare beds in East London hospitals “are indeed incorrect and false.”

“Linked to the availability of beds is the efficient supply of oxygen in our hospitals, which is essential for Covid-19 patients. Afrox will meet the oxygen demands of our hospitals. Hospitals are actively monitoring the oxygen supply side.” .

He said there was a marked decrease in cases.

“The daily average of admissions has decreased by 46.6%, going from 204 admissions on December 14 to 109 on December 21.

“Now we are seeing less patient admissions than on December 10.”

He said that the number of patients admitted to public and private hospitals in the province is 1,795; with public hospitals representing the majority of 1 211 people admitted and private hospitals with 584 patients admitted for Covid-19.

Funerals are super spreader

He also called “once again for our people to bury their loved ones in 72 hours as we did during the first wave.”

“Funerals are one of the super-spreaders of Covid-19 infections. Most people go to funerals and, days later, they get sick and most do not survive. This is how serious infections are at funerals. Families and reverends must complete burials in strictly two hours. “
