The defense force has joined the search for a group of men responsible for a massacre on Christmas Day that left seven dead in the Mt Ayllif area of the Eastern Cape.

Police said that around 5 a.m. on December 25, a group of men from the Mpeni area clashed with men from the Nokhatshile village. Seven people, mostly from the Nokhatshile group, died and another six were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, a spokesman for Eastern Cape Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane, told eCNA that the fight was allegedly due to a dispute over the taxi route in the area.

SAPS spokesman Brig Vish Naidoo said the army had been called in.

“Following the murder of the seven men on Mt Ayllif this morning, the South African National Defense Force has joined forces with SAPS to hunt down suspects who are possibly hiding in a vast, unforgiving and undulating area around Mt Ayllif. SANDF is assisting with equipment, including helicopters, and providing reinforcements as a force multiplier for our already deployed reinforcements, ”he said.

The acting commissioner of the national police, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi, ordered the immediate deployment of SAPS reinforcements to ensure rapid stabilization of the area, “which is currently very tense.”

“I appeal to the community within Mt Ayliff and the surrounding areas to exercise the utmost restraint and assist the police in their investigations to bring those responsible for these attacks to their accounts,” Mfazi said.
