In iOS 14, iPhone owners have received one of the best generational updates in years, but it is far from bug-free. And now Apple has just confirmed a number of serious issues for updaters.

In an official post, Apple reveals seven major data and battery-related issues with iOS 14 and watchOS 7, with the company claiming that the only solution is to “erase all content and settings on your iPhone.”

When broken down, Apple ranks six as related to its Activity, Health and Fitness apps, as well as the broader issue of “Increased battery drain on your iPhone or Apple Watch.” The latter will not surprise anyone who has seen the increasing number of complaints directed to the company’s @AppleSupport Twitter account since iOS 14 was released. Some examples:

“@AppleSupport Whoa. iOs 14.0.1 drains the battery a lot, days later. Whyyyyyyyy? Sigh. I hate having to recharge at noon again. “- source

“@AppleSupport … Good God! iOS 14.0.1 … battery life is draining … you’re killing me with this. My new phone and I can’t take [it] never more!” – source

“The battery drain with the iOS 14 update is ridiculous, I feel like I shouldn’t have. comeeee at @Apple @AppleSupport ”- source

“Battery drain is amazing on iOS 14. Do something @AppleSupport @Apple” – source

“@AppleSupport iOS 14 updated on iPhone with significant battery drain and overheating. Please help? – source

On the bright side, Apple’s belief that these issues can be fixed without an iOS update is good news. That said, a complete data wipe is also the nuclear option, so Apple isn’t messing around. At this stage, it’s unclear how effective this solution has been for affected users, but I’d also be surprised if iOS 14.0.2 isn’t speeding up as we speak.

Battery drain has been a persistent problem for iPhone owners in recent years, and it seems unlikely to change given Apple’s risky decision to launch the iPhone 12 range with smaller batteries than its equivalent iPhone 11 models. This seems particularly strange given that the new iPhones are also equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G modems, hardware that has forced rivals to put in bigger batteries to stand still.

Will Apple get away with this bet? With the release date fast approaching, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
