JOHANNESBURG – Attempts by organizations to lift government restrictions on beaches have taken another blow.

The Pretoria High Court has ruled against AfriForum and the Great Brak Business Forum in their attempt to declare the new government regulations unconstitutional.

The groups had argued that it was impossible to prove any link between the restrictions and preventing the spread of COVID-19.

However, the court considered the government’s decision to close some of the country’s beaches valid.

AfriForum said it is disappointed by the ruling.

Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all Eastern Cape beaches, as well as the Garden Route, will be closed from December 16 to January 3. He also said that all the beaches in KwaZulu-Natal would be closed on December 16, 25, 26 and 31, as well as January 1-3.
