JOHANNESBURG – Angelo Agrizzi’s lawyer said Bosasa’s former chief operating officer was in the ICU of a private hospital in Johannesburg.

Daniel Witz said his client was in serious condition and said doctors worked through the night to stabilize him at the health center after he was transferred Monday.

The corruption and fraud defendant Agrizzi fell ill after spending a night in prison last week.

He was initially admitted to a public hospital, however, there was a request to transfer him to a private medical institution.

Agrizzi lost his request for bail last week after he was arrested in connection with dubious payments Bosasa made to former ANC MP Vincent Smith.

Witz said Agrizzi’s medical situation was deteriorating.

“Mr. Agrizzi is in a serious condition. As the country knows, this was reported to the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court and, unfortunately, was not taken into account and, regrettably, Mr. Agrizzi’s condition has worsened during his stay in Johannesburg Central Prison and the public hospital. ”

Witz said that if the worst case scenario unfolds and the former Bosasa executive died, the state would lose access to crucial evidence.

He said that while they expected Agrizzi’s health to improve, the NPA would take a big hit if the situation worsened.

“Yes, God forbid, the worst happens there are some serious cases that will remain without prosecution. Angelo is a very important state witness, both in the state capture and in the numerous prosecutions that are being initiated or are underway and the state will agree to crucial evidence against capture and state capture. “
