JOHANNESBURG – Convicted felon and Nelson Mandela Bay councilor Andile Lungisa has retracted his comments criticizing the impartiality of the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) judges presiding over his assault case.
Lungisa is serving a two-year jail sentence in a prison in Grahamstown after he assaulted a Democratic Alliance (DA) councilor with a glass jug in 2016.
He is appealing his sentence in the Constitutional Court, but chose to remain behind bars despite the court’s decision to grant him bail.
During her court appearance in September, Lungisa alleged that her case was not decided fairly due to the judges’ political and family affiliations.
The judges demanded a retraction of the statement or that Lungisa provide evidence to back up their allegations.
In a statement posted Monday on the SCA’s Twitter account, the councilor retracted his comments and admitted they were unfounded.

Abner Mosase of the #FreeLungisa campaign said the ANC councilor made this turn because of his good relationship with the country and its constitution.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Lungisa is still incarcerated and there is no time to go around and gather all the information on the validity of those claims. For this reason and because he has a good relationship with the country and the constitution, that his own ego has decided to withdraw, ”said Mosase.
