A group of members of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) intends to obtain an injunction against the National Youth Task Team (NYTT) of the ANC.

The group, calling itself the ANC Youth League crisis committee, announced on Sunday that they have reached this resolution after several attempts to involve party leaders in this matter fell on deaf ears.

“The crisis committee has resolved to initiate a legal process against the ANC, demanding a declaratory order and injunctions against the NYTT and all the PEC (provincial executive committees) of the youth league,” reads one of the resolutions of the meeting on Saturday.

The crisis committee intends to deliver these injunctions on November 6 during a national march to the ANC offices.

“If they don’t want to explain us, as members of the ANC Youth League, then maybe they want to explain it in court documents,” Nonceba Mhlauli said, outside the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House on Sunday afternoon.

They held their press conference in front of Luthuli House to symbolize how young people had been left out of the party, Luzuko Bashman said.

Dissolved

In July of last year, the ANC NEC dissolved ANCYL and appointed the NYTT.

At the time, ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule said that the term of the ANCYL national executive committee had come to an end and that the NYTT was tasked with overseeing the rebuilding of the youth league.

They had to ensure that a national youth league congress was held no later than January 31, 2020.

The NYTT is convened by Thandi Mahambehlala, along with coordinator Sibongile Besani.

They had been tasked with implementing a youth league action program, and working with and being assisted by former youth league leaders Zizi Kodwa, Malusi Gigaba and Fikile Mbalula.

Other prominent ANC figures committed to stabilizing the youth league include Pule Mabe, Dakota Legoete, Faith Muthambi, Ronald Lamola, and David Masondo.

Outgoing youth league president Collen Maine and treasurer Reggie Nkabinde have also been retained on the task force.

The ‘nursing home’

According to the crisis committee, it contravenes the ANC and ANCYL constitutions for people over 35 years of age to deal with youth affairs in the organization. They have started calling the NYTT the “nursing home.”

The crisis committee has raised its concerns with the ANC’s national leadership since the establishment of the NYTT, and has also brought it to the provincial structures.

In August, a letter signed by 107 ANCYL members was presented to Magashule, demanding the immediate dissolution of the NYTT and the removal of all people over the age of 35 from ANCYL structures.

“We should not go to court,” Bashman said Sunday, adding that comrades should have been moved by their own consciences so as not to exaggerate their positions.

In September, Besani told News24 that there was sympathy for youth concerns and that it was not new for the NYTT to be comprised of members of the NEC.

However, she added that it might not be the “best” thing, but that it was part of the mother body’s efforts to revive its youth wing.
