JOHANNESBURG – The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) has reaffirmed its stance on corruption, saying that Secretary General Ace Magashule would appear before the ruling party’s integrity commission this weekend.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the party Tuesday after a three-day NEC meeting. He said the party would fully implement the mandate of its 54th national conference held in Nasrec, along with its decisions.

One of the sticking points in the final NEC meeting for 2020 was a resolution for members involved in serious crimes to step aside.

Some have been pushing for Magashule, who faces 21 counts of corruption over an asbestos project dating back to when he was prime minister of the Free State, to be forced to step aside.

In a live speech of his final statement, Ramaphosa said that the NEC had reaffirmed several principles, including a firm stance against wrongdoing in both the party and society.

Ramaphosa said the ANC would not dilute its position on the matter.

“Understand that these are critical to the renewal of our organization and the restoration of the credibility of the movement among South Africans,” said Ramaphosa. “This is a clear mandate that the conference gave us,” he added.

Ramaphosa confirmed what sources at the meeting said. Eyewitness news – that officials should go back and work on guidelines and a framework for dealing with members implicated in wrongdoing.

He said Magashule was expected to appear before the integrity commission this weekend, and that top party officials would process the results in due course.
