Cape Town – The ANC said on Friday it was saddened by the death of Dr. Vejay Ramlakan, Nelson Mandela’s personal physician and a former surgeon general for the South African National Defense Force.

“The African National Congress observes with deep sadness the passing of Dr. Vejay Ramlakan. The former surgeon general of the National Defense Force passed away at age 62 on Thursday, August 27, 2020.

“Dr. Ramlakan is the former personal physician of the late President Nelson Mandela,” said Pule Mabe, national spokesman for the ANC.

He said Ramlakan was a freedom fighter “in his own name and right” who at the height of the crackdown served as a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) tasked with commanding Operation Mariposa, an underground command structure in the area. Durban metropolitan area.

“Dr. Ramlakan belongs to a cabal of distinguished freedom fighters who sacrificed their personal comfort for the liberation of the rest of the people of South Africa.
