JOHANNESBURG – Seven of the eight African National Congress (ANC) regions in the Eastern Cape, the ANC Provincial Women’s League and Andile Lungisa’s own branch have distanced themselves from the attacks it launched against ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, and provincial leaders on their first day out of jail Tuesday.

Some have expressed disappointment at Lungisa’s comments, while his own District 2 branch in Nelson Mandela Bay has warned that his views could discredit the ruling party.

Lungisa, who is on early parole due to qualifying for special referrals, held a press conference calling on Ramaphosa to stop the attacks on former President Jacob Zuma.

The former MMC and ANC councilor was convicted of assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm and was sentenced to two years, for striking a councilor from the Democratic Alliance (DA) with a glass jug during a council session in 2016.

The coordinator of the regional task force in Nelson Mandela Bay, Luyolo Nqakula, said they were doing everything possible to condemn Lungisa’s comments because they were not justified.

“In the form of the president of the ANC and the provincial president, it is understood not only as an attack on their personalities, but it is a direct attack on the organization itself for a person to make statements that have been mobilized against the elected leadership of the organization, ”Nqakula said.
