JOHANNESBURG – The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) will meet this weekend as COVID-19-related corruption allegations erode the ruling party.

The meeting will likely address the issues raised by its chairman Cyril Ramaphosa in his letter last Sunday, where he said the party must agree to be charged number one with corruption.

On Friday, former President Jacob Zuma responded to the letter and accused Ramaphosa of betraying the ANC with his anti-corruption stance.

Zuma wrote to Ramaphosa accusing him of discrediting the party, a sign of the growing divisions within the ANC ahead of the meeting.

The former president said that Ramaphosa was the first ANC president to appear in public and accuse the party of criminality.

He said the Ramaphosa letter is a distraction for which the president accuses the entire ANC to save his own skin.

Ramaphosa has ordered investigations into reports of corruption in the government response to COVID-19, including the diversion of funds intended for protective equipment for COVID-19, as well as food delivery packages.
