The National Tax Authority (NPA) in Mpumalanga confirmed on Monday that a former MEC had appeared before the Nelspruit magistrates court along with his 26-year-old stepson on rape charges.

“[The former MEC] was arrested today and appeared in court along with [an adult male]”Said NPA spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa.

“The victims are two girls,” Nyuswa added.

The case was postponed until October 1 for a formal request for bond. Meanwhile, both remain behind bars.

Ntshalintshali said the member had been suspended from the party.

“[He] has been summarily suspended as a member of the ANC … until the case is concluded by the competent court, in accordance with the resolutions of the last meeting of the ANC national executive committee and the 54th national conference, which ruled that all members accused of corruption and other serious crimes should withdraw from all activities associated with the ANC, ”he said in a statement.

The party said it took the accusations seriously and supported the victims.

Police could not be immediately reached for further details.

It was not the first time the suspect had been implicated in rape allegations.

He was previously arrested after a woman accused him of rape, but he denied the accusation, claiming that the meeting had been consensual.

The charges were later dropped by the state.
