JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) said it was disappointed by those working to undermine its internal processes after the distribution of a letter that purported to summon Secretary General Ace Magashule to his integrity commission.

In the document, which has been widely shared on social media, Magashule is summoned to explain the statements it made last month that it “will never step aside because of corruption allegations.”

But the party moved to clarify that Magashule has not been formally presented with that letter.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe said that Magashule had not received a letter, but did not deny the authenticity of the document.

“We will await a formal communication within the organization and as such, the SG will be able to respond accordingly.”

Mabe criticized the circulation of the letter on social media, criticizing anonymous people who, she said, were undermining party processes.

In the document, the secretary-general is asked to respond to claims he made last month that he would not step down on corruption allegations.

The comments sparked a backlash from the public mounting pressure on party structures to rebuke him.

According to the letter, Magashule is expected to appear before the party’s integrity commission in the next week.
