Uitenhage ANC councilor Lunga Nombexeza has been taken into custody following his arrest after he allegedly shot a 42-year-old man on Saturday.

Nombexeza appeared before the Uitenhage Magistrates Court on Monday facing charges of attempted murder after he allegedly opened fire on a man driving a car.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m., when the 42-year-old whistleblower was driving a Toyota Tazz and heading to Pityaana Street in Kwanobuhle.

“At the corners of Pityaana and Kinikini streets, he saw the suspect leave the courtyard with a firearm in his possession,” Naidu added.

“The suspect fired several shots at the complainant’s car.”

No one was injured during the incident, however the complainant left and reported the incident to Metro police officers on the street.

The officers returned to the crime scene and the complainant pointed to the house.

Naidu said that a firearm had been thrown out the window of the house, and the suspect was detained by subway police officers who handed him over to the police upon arrival.

The spokeswoman for the National Tax Authority, Anelisa Ngcakani, said the case was referred until Tuesday for him to name a legal representative.

“He is in preventive detention,” he added.

Police sent the firearm for ballistic analysis.
