The ANC and the EFF have convicted a former MEC from Mpumalanga and his supporters, who were caught on camera celebrating their release on bail on rape charges.

A video circulating on social media shows the man, who cannot be identified, being carried on the shoulders of his supporters after the Nelspruit trial court granted bail of 20,000 rand.

In the video, the group, some of whom are seen holding alcohol, sang and whistled in celebration.

The man, who is a member of the ANC provincial executive committee, is accused of raping and assaulting two eight-year-old girls.

Her 26-year-old stepson is a co-defendant in the matter.

‘Non-ANC members’

ANC spokesperson Sasekeni Manzini said the ANC was not celebrating anything.

“Those who are celebrating are not members of the ANC,” he said.

Manzini said they will continue to support the victims in the case.

EFF Mpumalanga leader Collen Sedibe condemned the man and his followers, saying he was immature and reckless.

“For him, holding bail is immature and unjustified. Bail does not mean you win the case,” he said.

Sedibe said the EFF was seeking legal opinion on whether it could appeal the bond judgment.

NPA spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said the matter was postponed until November 20 for further investigation.
