Limpopo police are seeking information leading to the arrest of those involved in the burning of a business premises, a house and a vehicle, and the slaughter of cattle in GaRapitsi.
The incident occurred on Thursday when a mob charged a 47-year-old businessman with murder.
“It is alleged that a group of residents of this village set fire to the victim’s shop and a motor vehicle. They went to his house, burned it and in the process killed some animals, including chickens, goats and pigs, “said police spokesman Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.
Damage is estimated to exceed R1m.
The suspects later fled the scene.
“Neighbors allegedly accused the man of being responsible for the brutal murder of a young couple – Nius Malatjie, 21, and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Lucia Malapane – whose bodies were found in their home with multiple [stab] wounded on Tuesday, October 6, “he said.
Cases of arson and intentional damage to property have been opened.
The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, condemned the alleged acts of vigilantism and popular justice. He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, saying “tough measures” would be taken against them.
“We appeal to members of the community who may have information that can assist the police in their investigations to reach out to them rather than resort to violence,” he added.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing. People with information have been urged to contact the police.
