Legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has reigned over Indian cinema for several decades, having faced numerous problems in the medium, ranging from professional failures to extreme health problems.
What many young fans may not be aware of is how the actor had been in a near-fatal accident while filming Coolie, which led him to be declared “clinically dead” for a few minutes as well, in June 1982.
During a fight scene in the movie, Bachchan, after being hit by Puneet Issar, was supposed to jump on the table, but instead misjudged and ended up jumping on the edge that seriously injured him.
The actor had to be rushed to the hospital, where he underwent several emergency operations and was declared “clinically dead” before being put on a respirator and did not respond to all treatments for a week.
Speaking about the incident later during an interview with Simi Garewal, Amitabh said: “I was in a coma. He had broken my gut in the accident on set. And then there was the surgery that was performed almost as an emergency. We went to Bombay 5 days later, the sutures were broken and I had to undergo another surgery. It was the end of that surgery where I couldn’t get out of the anesthesia for 12-14 hours. It was then that they felt that it was all over because there was almost no pulse, BP had dropped to almost zero. “
Speaking of his recovery, he said, “That was a devastating time for me because the first time I was lifted to my feet to help me walk, my legs collapsed and I fell to the ground. I felt I had lost my power. I had to learn. to walk again. It is like teaching a child to walk again. And the repair work after leaving the hospital because you are not the same person and you will never be the same person again. You have lost almost 75% of your body Your face doesn’t look the same, your hair doesn’t look the same. “
Bachchan’s wife, Jaya, had also told Garewal about his reaction to the entire accident: “When I got to the hospital where my brother-in-law said, ‘Where were you, were we looking for you? Have we been looking for you? And I said I went home to see children. Then he took me, asked me to be brave, and then I’ll tell you. I thought, no, it is not possible, he is not going to do this. “
“I know it is not possible. He had the prayer book in hand, Hanuman Chalisa. Dr. Dastoor came by and said, ‘It is only your prayers that will help.’ But I couldn’t read it. He couldn’t see what they were doing, but he could see that they were pumping his heart, they were injecting him. And after they gave up, I saw their toe move and I said, ‘It moved, it moved.’ “
