DURBAN – Cape Town has confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns is interested in recruiting the services of Kermit Erasmus.

Erasmus had been in top form during the PSL 2019/20 season that had just concluded and was instrumental in charging Citizens to the top eight. He scored many important goals to take his club to sixth place in the Premiership at the end of the period.

Independent Media has been reliably informed that the Sundowns are favorites to sign Bafana striker Bafana.

“Kermit was interested in Turkey. There was a team that wanted to involve the city about their services. If that move doesn’t materialize, it’s likely to go to Sundowns, ”said a source.

The reigning Absa Premiership champions are out shopping. They have already acquired the services of Peter Shalulile and Mothobi Mvala from Highlands Park; Grant Magerman and Jody February from Ajax Cape Town; and Ricardo Goss, Hashim Domingo and Gift Motupa from Bidvest Wits.

The Brazilians are set to complete the signing of Aubrey Modiba from SuperSport United in the coming weeks.

Cape Town President John Comitis did not deny that the Sundowns are interested in Erasmus.

“Sundowns showed interest about three weeks ago. They spoke to me but nothing materialized since then. At the moment, we have not heard from them, ”Comitis said.

Erasmus, approaching the twilight of his career, burst onto the scene in 2008 in the colors of SuperSport United before traveling to Europe. After returning from Europe, he spent time at SuperSport and Pirates before returning abroad.

“We have to be realistic about the value of Kermit. If we get a realistic value for his services we have to entertain him (the interest) because we have a plan on how to fill the void that will be left if we reach an agreement with Sundowns, ”Comitis added.

The South African international scored 10 goals and had two assists last season. He was the main man of the Citizens facing the goal.

Comitis confirmed that there is a foreign club interested in the shooter.

“(Yes), I also have international interest in him, but so far nothing has happened. There was also interest in one of our advocates (Thami Mkhize). We are not entertaining that, we have an armed team to challenge things, ”Comitis said.

The Sundowns have put more emphasis on strengthening their strike force. The club has lacked that firepower that it used to possess during the times of Percy Tau and Khama Billiat.

Such has been their weakness up front that it is the midfielders who have scored the most goals in the last two seasons.

Two seasons ago, it was Lebogang Maboe who scored the most goals, while Themba Zwane was the man to turn to last season.
