JOHANNESBURG – Controversial former SA Airways chairman Dudu Myeni on Wednesday refused to answer a series of questions in the commission of inquiry into the state’s capture for fear she might incriminate herself.
Test leader Kate Hofmeyr struggled to get answers from the former chairman of Mhlathuze Water during a dramatic day at the investigation, where Myeni remotely provided evidence after coming into contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19.
After a barrage of questions from Hofmeyr, Myeni sent his to the chairman of the commission, the vice president of the Supreme Court, Raymond Zondo: “Am I in the position of presiding judge?
Judge Zondo responded that she was not being tried.
Many of Hofmeyr’s questions were followed by Myeni’s standard answer: “Can’t I answer that question in case I incriminate myself?”
However, after initially answering a question about her CV stating that she would not answer it for fear of incriminating herself, Myeni addressed her qualifications.
“My CV does not indicate that I have that qualification. My CV doesn’t look like this. In my CV it is very explicit that I studied but did not complete it, ”Myeni said, responding to Hofmeyr’s questions about the status of his Bachelor of Administration at the University of Zululand (UniZulu).
He asked Hofmeyr, “By whose discretion are you asking that question?”
Myeni maintained that she wrote her CV in her own way and that her approach is to fight poverty, inequality as a female leader and that she never sat down to watch other people write their own CVs.
According to Myeni, her CV is written according to her own standard.
“Whose standard is my CV to copy?”
She explained that enrolling in UniZulu was a great achievement as a black woman, especially since she started studying after marriage and indicated that she passed her first and second years.
She accused the commission of trying to put her in a bad position because she should have followed the Western standard of writing a CV.
Another controversial question that he first refused to answer with his standard answer was whether he understood the crime of fraud.
“Mrs. Myeni, do you know what fraud is? Do you know that fraud is a crime? “asked Hofmeyr.
Myeni replied: “As a responsible citizen, it is known that I know the definition of fraud and what fraud means.”
Judge Zondo also warned Myeni against his standard response without giving reasons.
“It is not enough to say that you will not respond; you must also provide the basis, “he said.
Myeni said the reason he didn’t want to use the words “reject” was because of his respect for the commission.
She defended her tenure as president of the SAA, saying that she did everything she should have done to fulfill her responsibilities as part of a collective.
Myeni will continue to testify on Thursday.
