JOHANNESBURG – The Kaizer Chiefs’ new coach, Gavin Hunt, has maintained his usual calm and optimistic demeanor, insisting that the dark cloud hanging over the club will not deter them from pursuing their goals this season.
Bosses cannot sign any players during the current transfer window. This is after FIFA imposed a one-year transfer ban on them, following irregularities during the signing of Aro Hasina Andrianarimanana in 2018.
The outcome of the Chiefs’ appeal to lift their ban is still up in the air, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has yet to issue its ruling. That waiting game, however, has forced Amakhosi to sit back and watch his rivals beef up their squads for the new season.
But in Hunt, who replaced Ernst Middendorp, the Chiefs have a shrewd and experienced coach who aims to bring the club back to the top of South African football with the squad at his disposal.
“I have been well received at the club. Everything is in place to be successful. We know the situation, the signing of players and everything, ”said Hunt, a four-time league winner.
“But we have a team that did very well last year, but it was very unfortunate. So we will try to work on that. And hopefully the ruling will be taken sooner rather than later.
“There is not much I can say about everything, but the players have been committed in training.
“But the test will be there on Sunday. I haven’t been here long. But there is no time for excuses. The good thing is that I know the league and the players ”.
Amakhosi fell from grace in the past five seasons, after failing to win a trophy. But that agony became unbearable last season after losing the Premiership title on the final day of the season, despite leading most of the campaign.

To ensure Hunt’s time at Chiefs pays off, the 56-year-old will be assisted by Dillion Sheppard, who had a successful run with the development ranks at Wits, now defunct, and Arthur Zwane, who knows the ins and outs. of Amakhosi.
“There were a lot of back and forth twists from the staff before I arrived. Arthur has been here and I know him very well. It has been a great help so far and I’m sure we can improve over time, ”Hunt said.
“I started Sheppy’s career when he was 17 and he has been with me at 38 as a coach. I think he will do very well as a coach in the future. Is excited. He works well with the youngsters and that has been the idea so that the Diski players are on par with the first team ”.
Hunt’s first evaluation as commanding officer of the Chiefs will begin Sunday. The Chiefs will face Maritzburg United in the MTN8 quarterfinals at FNB Stadium in hopes of beginning their journey to attempt redemption with poise.
Hunt, however, knows that Maritzburg, who finished seventh last season, will not be easy to convince, as he beat the Chiefs twice in three games last season and said: “I don’t think they are any different compared to last season. pass. They will be competitive.
“I know what to expect and I hope we can get the players into a situation that they can understand, which I know they do.
