JOHANNESBURG – The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department said that after the ban on the sale of alcohol, it believes more beds will be made available in the province for COVID-19 patients.

On Wednesday, Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu gave an update on the pandemic in the province.

She rejected reports that the KZN was short of beds due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases in the country and the MEC said they were concerned about its statistics which had remained consistently high.

“KZN is the province that seems to maintain high COVID-19 infection figures.”

Simelane-Zulu said the provincial government had moved with great speed to build capacity in various ways to try to control the spread of the virus.

“We are confident that the bed occupancy will become much more stable thanks to the action of the level 3 regulations.”

The Health MEC said that a ban on the sale of alcohol would help the province control the spread of the virus.
