The police have dealt with street vendors of illicit substances.

Two men ages 55 and 50 will appear in the Bloemfontein trial court on Monday on one count of violation of the counterfeit products law.

On Saturday, highway police officers spotted a white-paneled van on the N6 Reddersburg road near the Free State University farm. They stopped the vehicle and during a search found 70 boxes of counterfeit Sevilles cigarettes with an estimated street value of R700,000, Free State police spokesman Col Thandi Mbambo said.

The Bothaville trial court will hear the case of an alleged drug dealer on Monday, accused of hiding his stash under the hood of his car.

Mbambo said officers had learned of an alleged drug house in Kgotsong. The house was searched, as well as two motor vehicles.

In an Opel Corsa, 1,640 drugs were found that were suspected to be Star tablets with a street value of approximately R98,400 and cash wrapped on top of the engine.

The 32-year-old owner of the vehicle was arrested.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane praised officers for the raid.

“Drugs are dangerous to the well-being of our communities, as drug users end up committing crimes such as domestic violence and other serious crimes,” Motswenyane said.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape last week, a liquor store manager was arrested in Mdantsane for violating the regulations of the Disaster Management Act. A second suspect was also arrested.

“These arrests came after information was received that the liquor store continued to sell liquor to customers in the early hours of the morning on Highway in Mdantsane. After the investigation, it was established that, indeed, there was evidence that liquor was loaded into private vehicles before 5 in the morning, “said Brig Tembinkosi Kinana.

Invoices were also found at the store after a search warrant was obtained, showing illicit New Year’s Eve alcohol sales. The value of the illegally sold liquor is estimated at R66,700.

The two were also charged with violating the curfew.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Maj-Gen Thembisile Patekile said: “Non-compliance remains a crime in terms of the Disaster Management Act regulations and confinement restrictions, and individuals who are determined to violate these laws must answer for their actions in the courts of justice. “
