Cape Town – Former Bosasa executive and accused of corruption Angelo Agrizzi was transferred from a public hospital to a private one on Monday, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed.

“His family requested that he be transferred to a private hospital,” said departmental spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.

“They have that option, but they must pay for it,” he added.

Correctional services could not comment on the severity of Agrizzi’s condition.

He was placed in pre-trial detention last week and denied bail at the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court after the National Tax Authority (NPA) Directorate of Investigation (ID) argued that he posed a risk of patent leak.

Prosecutors said Agrizzi had lied in an earlier bail affidavit about his financial situation and the fact that he still had an Italian passport.

In court it emerged that he had recently transferred millions of rand abroad and purchased real estate in the Tuscan hillside town of Castel del Piano.

Agrizzi had appeared in court hooked to a mobile oxygen tank and was hospitalized the day after his appearance.

He faces corruption charges related to alleged bribes paid to former deputy Vincent Smith so that the legislator, who chaired Parliament’s prison services portfolio committee, abandon his hostility towards Bosasa.

The company entered into contracts worth more than 1 billion rand (about US $ 61 million) with the Department of Correctional Services.

Agrizzi, the company’s former chief operating officer, delivered sensational testimony to Zondo’s commission of inquiry into the state capture about how he allegedly used sponsorship to milk the state for money.
