JOHANNESBURG – Correctional Services confirmed Thursday that former Bosasa CEO Angelo Agrizzi was transferred from prison to an outside public hospital.
Agrizzi’s attorneys said his health deteriorated after spending a night behind bars after his request for bail was denied in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.
He has been charged with corruption and bribery for his alleged involvement in the payment of money to former ANC Member of Parliament Vincent Smith.
Correctional Services said in a statement that all inmates were entitled to health care services in accordance with its provisions.
However, Agrizzi’s attorney, Mannie Witz, insisted that if his client had not been sent to jail due to his serious medical condition, this would not have happened.
Agrizzi came to his court appearance Wednesday with an oxygen tank, and his lawyers explained that he had been hospitalized in recent months due to various health problems.
However, the argument did not win the court’s favor, and the State argued that he was at risk of flight.
Agrizzi’s mistake was not to disclose that he and his wife had been transferring and purchasing assets abroad since 2018, raising suspicions about his stated intentions to stand trial in South Africa.
The department said its condition would continue to be monitored.
He had already filed an appeal against the judgment against the rejection of his request for bail.
