JOHANNESBURG – African Union (AU) President Cyril Ramaphosa said Africa should support Nigeria’s Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, one of the two remaining candidates for the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). ).

Okonjo-Iweala and Yoo Myung-hee from South Korea are the two remaining candidates in the third and final round of the selection process.

She said Okonjo-Iweala was a highly distinguished African who had excelled in various public positions in her native Nigeria, including responsibilities at the AU and on numerous international assignments.

Ramaphosa said African regions and countries should unite and support the African candidate because her leadership in the WTO would help the continent’s full integration as a major player in the global multilateral trading system.

This is especially now that the continent is working to put the African Continental Free Trade Area into operation.

Ramaphosa said he was proud of the high caliber of the continent’s candidates, including Abdel Hamid Mamdouh of Egypt and Amina Mohamed of Kenya, who were eliminated in previous rounds.

But he said now the continent must spare no effort to ensure Okonjo-Iweala makes history by being chosen as the first African to lead the WTO.
