JOHANNESBURG – Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said the additional deployment of soldiers would offer services such as medical assistance in the country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa informed Parliament that his deployment of more than 70,000 additional soldiers is expected to last until June 26.
In a letter sent to the Joint Standing Defense Committee of Parliament, Ramaphosa said the new boots were expected to hit the ground in the coming days.
Speaking in the Eusebius McKaiser Show, Mapisa-Nqakula said the government was obligated to use all of its resources during this period to fight COVID-19.
“We have a PND that works in the Defense Force called the South African Military Health Services, which, under the direction of the Department of Health, will come in when the need arises. Right now they have been on hold. If there is any control, that should be done. We hope the Health Department trusts the skills we have. “
She said they had considered expert research into how the virus is expected to spread in the coming months.
“First of all, what we have seen from other countries and what we have heard from the professor last week, is that we are likely to see an escalation of the numbers, we are likely to see the exponential curve around August / September.”
Co-Chair of Parliament’s Joint Standing Defense Committee Cyrila Xaba said they want a detailed Defense Department plan on the decision to deploy additional soldiers in the fight against COVID-19.
The president’s letter said that this operation would cost more than R4.6 billion.
Speaking in the Eusebius McKaiser ShowXaba said the leadership of the defense force would appear before the committee on Wednesday morning.
“When it comes to deployment in the country, we hope that the Department of Defense, and in particular the Defense Force, will give us a detailed deployment plan so that we know exactly how these members will be used. Now the numbers have increased from 2,820 to more than 76,000 members. “
