The head of the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, Professor Adam Habib, will step aside as the institution investigates accusations of racism against him.

The former vice chancellor of Wits University was criticized for using the n-word in response to a question about teachers using the term in class.

Marie Staunton, chair of the SOAS Board of Trustees, confirmed in a statement Thursday that Habib would step aside so as not to compromise the investigation.

“We will continue to find ways to facilitate conversations and mediated engagement, including with Adam, that focus on the black community and the wider SOAS community, in ways that also don’t compromise the investigation process,” Staunton said.
