The secretary general of the African National Congress, Ace Magashule, has refused to comment on the call by the trade union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) that the party should take action against him, as he faces corruption and fraud charges.

Magashule was in Ward 130 in Naledi, Soweto, on Friday doing a door-to-door comeback campaign after the by-elections.

Magashule said it was important for them to return to the districts to thank them for voting and to deliver food packages to residents.

He also promised that the party, in collaboration with the neighborhood councilor, would continue to offer support to the area.

Speaking on the sidelines and responding to a question about his thoughts on Cosatu asking the ANC to deal with him, Magashule said: “Don’t let me comment. I am a member of the African National Congress. [and] very disciplined, and that’s what Cosatu said, let’s leave it there. “

On Thursday, eNCA reported that Cosatu said during a press conference that the party should deal decisively with Magashule and be an example for the country.

News24 previously reported that the former Free State Prime Minister is charged with 21 counts of fraud, corruption and money laundering in connection with a R255 million asbestos audit corruption case.

Earlier this month, Magashule appeared in Bloemfontein Magistrates Court.

During his visit to Naledi, Magashule said the party directed the councilor and branch to return to the neighborhood on a monthly basis and conduct door-to-door visits to understand the challenges people face.

Resolved

The room has been experiencing power issues that are now being resolved, Magashule said.

He said the power restoration was a work in progress as some residents were still in the dark.

African National Congress

Members of the ANC march during the by-election campaign.

“We are happy that other houses have been connected and the other 25 in the next two days, it will be done. We are waiting for other substations [to be installed] in the next two / three days.

“We have just reached out to our people, we are going to work hard. We have recognized you and we are committed to working with you. The future of South Africa [and] Soweto will be brighter with the African National Congress, “said the Secretary-General.

Speaking about gender-based violence and the 16 days of activism against the scourge, Magashule said that it remains a problem that must be solved.

He added that he was happy there were patrol cars at night in ward 130.

“And they were actually telling us about some of their needs overnight; they don’t have torches … We appreciate the fact that people are volunteering for our communities. This fight must continue, it must not be just for 16 days. It should be all the time, 365 days. “
