A woman who deliberately cut her hand in an insurance fraud plot was sentenced to two years in jail.
Julija Adlesic, 22, from Slovenia, is accused of using a circular saw to cut her left wrist in early 2019.
She had taken out insurance policies with five companies the previous year and would have received 1 million euros (35 million rand) in payment.
However, the young woman was found guilty of attempted insurance fraud in a Ljubljana court, reports Sky News.
Adlesic’s boyfriend has been sentenced to three years in prison, with a one-year suspended sentence for his father.
The couple claim that Adlesic’s left hand was accidentally cut off while cutting branches at their home in the Slovenian capital. They left their hands at the scene of the incident when they went to the hospital.
The day before, Adlesic’s boyfriend had done an Internet search for prosthetic hands, which prosecutors said was further proof that the removal of the hand had been deliberate.
They claim the couple left their hand when they went to the hospital to make sure the injury was permanent, but Adlesic’s hand was recovered and reattached.
Adlesic maintains that he is innocent: “Nobody wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed.
“I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.”
