  • Candy Couser, a Big Cat Rescue volunteer, was left with a “badly injured” shoulder after a tiger nearly ripped her arm off.
  • The 69-year-old was opening a door that had been clipped shut when the incident occurred.
  • Big Cat Rescue is owned by King tiger star Carole Baskin.

A volunteer’s arm was nearly ripped off by a tiger at Carole Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue.

According to a statement shared on Big Cat Sanctuary websiteCandy Couser, 69, who has volunteered at the sanctuary for five years, was feeding a tiger named Kimba when the incident occurred.

Kimba was locked in a section “that was far from where he used to be fed.” Candy noticed this and contacted the coordinator to find out why.

The statement goes on to say that the tiger was kept in that area while the cameras were installed. When Candy went to open the room, she noticed that a door was closed.

“This is our universal signal to NOT open a door without the coordinator coming to help, but Candy said she wasn’t thinking when she reached out to release her (sic).

“It is against our protocols for anyone to put any part of her body in a cage with a cat in it. Kimba grabbed her arm and almost ripped her off by the shoulder.”

Another employee came running when she heard the commotion, causing the tiger to let go of Candy.

According to the statement, employees assisted the victim, helping stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived “15-20 minutes” later.

In an update on the site, Big Cat Rescue wrote that Candy is “going to surgery soon”.

“He can move his fingers and his arm is broken in three places. However, his shoulder is badly damaged.”

As for the tiger, although its vaccines, including one for rabies, are all up to date, “they will still keep it in quarantine for 30 days to monitor it.”

If this all sounds too familiar, it’s because a similar incident took place at Carole’s. King tiger co-star, Zoo Joe Exotic’s previous year.

In the documentary series, we learn about Joe’s employee, Kelci “Saff” Saffery, whose arm was ripped off by a tiger.
