A suspect was killed in a shooting Wednesday after police and private security responded to an armed robbery at a store in Westonaria, Johannesburg.
According to police spokeswoman Mavela Masondo, it is alleged that around eight suspects entered the store around 10:40 a.m. and held employees and customers at gunpoint, before stealing their cell phones and undisclosed amounts of money. .
Two suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms were recovered. The third suspect died during the shootout with security guards, Masondo said.
The thieves were confronted by the security response team as they exited the store. Then there was a shooting.
One suspect was killed, while others fled on foot and in at least three hit-and-run cars, Masondo added.
“With the help of community members and chain store employees, one of the suspects who ran into a nearby store was arrested.
“Police responding to the incident arrested the second suspect a street from the crime scene and was found with an unlicensed firearm,” he said.

A bystander was shot in the lower body during the shooting and was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Masondo said a manhunt was underway for the suspects who remained at large.
The suspects are believed to be driving a white Nissan Almera, a gray Hyundai Accent and a gray Toyota Quest.
