More than 20 film festivals around the world have teamed up to stream free movies on YouTube after the coronavirus pandemic closed theaters and forced the cancellation of annual shows in Cannes and New York.

The 10 days of “We Are One: A Global Film Festival” will feature content curated by the Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto and Tribeca film festivals, among others, starting May 29, organizers Tribeca Enterprises said. and YouTube in a statement on Monday.

The festival will feature movies, documentaries, music, comedy, and conversations. No details of the schedule were announced and it was unlikely that any major new movies would be included that are usually released at film festivals.

The cancellation of the May Cannes film festival in France and the uncertainty surrounding the festivals in Venice and Toronto in September due to the coronavirus outbreak have robbed filmmakers and film studios of crucial windows to promote their new offerings to media and the public.

Organizers of the Cannes Film Festival said Monday they were proud to participate in the YouTube event “to highlight truly extraordinary films and talents, allowing audiences to experience the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic personalities of every festival. “

Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca film festival in New York, which also had to be canceled, said the idea was to inspire and unite people across borders during the pandemic.

“Everyone needs healing right now,” Rosenthal said in a statement.

Other participating festivals include those in Jerusalem, Mumbai, Sarajevo, Sydney, Tokyo and London.

Although the festival will be broadcast free of charge, viewers will be asked to donate to the Solidarity Response Fund COVID-19 of the World Health Organization.
