Police Minister Bheki Cele said he believed the police were working to make a breakthrough in catching the murderers of a couple on their farm in Normandien, near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.
On Wednesday, the minister met with organized community policing and agriculture structures, which called for better implementation of the Renewed National Rural Security Plan.
Cele assured the Normandien community that the current rural security strategy in the area will be reviewed.
Cele visited the area following the murder of the couple on their farm in Normandien over the weekend.
Unknown attackers shot the farm owner, 63, and his wife, 60, as well as their dog, according to police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala.
The Newcastle Township identified the couple as Glen and Vida Rafferty.
The revised strategy, which was launched in 2019, aimed to seek a holistic approach to rural security that included collaboration between the government, the private sector and civil society.
Advance if expected
Cele assured the residents of the farming community that there will be a transfer of resources to the identified areas to improve security in the area.
“We are committed to engaging with this community and charting a broader strategy that addresses the challenges identified here. We need to see if the cars and personnel serving this area are sufficient and what role the community can play in achieving safety, not just for the farmers but for everyone who lives here. “
While in Normandien, Cele also visited the Rafferty family.
Cele told the family that she believed the police were working to make a breakthrough in the case.
“The report I have received indicates that investigators are following up on the strong leads. Overall, the police have made significant progress in bringing those suspected of similar attacks in the northern agricultural area of KZN to the reserve. Since last year, seven of those attacks have taken place and the police have made arrests in all cases, “Cele said.
