New confirmed case of Covid-19 in East London prison, bringing the number to 87

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases at the East London Correctional Center in the Eastern Cape has increased after another official tested positive for the virus.

In a statement, the Department of Correctional Services said the number of confirmed cases in correctional institutions in the country was decreasing, and an additional case was reported Wednesday that increased the number to 115.

The prison is the most affected correctional facility in the country, with 31 officials and 56 inmates who test positive for the virus.

News24 previously reported that the outbreak of the virus in prison emanated from an official who worked in its women’s section.

The second positive case was confirmed on April 8 after an official, who sought the services of a private laboratory, received his results.

Also in the Eastern Cape, an official at the St Albans Correctional Center in Port Elizabeth tested positive for Covid-19.

Other prisons with confirmed cases

On Tuesday, the department announced the first Covid-19 case in a Gauteng prison after an official with the Johannesburg Correctional Center, also known as Sun City, tested positive.

In the Western Cape, the Worcester Correctional Center became the second prison in South Africa, where an inmate had tested positive for Covid-19.

As of Wednesday, seven officials and one prisoner tested positive at the prison, while 15 officials at Warm Bokkeveld prison, also in the Western Cape, also tested positive.

The Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Center in Limpopo has registered two cases.
