JOHANNESBURG – There was widespread disregard for Covid-19 regulations as hundreds of people gathered on the streets of Soweto to celebrate on Saturday.

There was little social distancing and few masks in crowded places.

Law enforcement authorities along with Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko conducted operations to enforce tight closure level one regulations in the area.

“With the detective operations we had a total of 146 arrests, of which 30 of those arrests are for gender violence,” said acting Provincial Police Commissioner in Gauteng, Major General Tommy Mthombeni.

Mazibuko says it is demoralizing to see so many people ignoring Covid-19 regulations.

“In fact, it is sad and demoralizing to think that as a government we are doing everything we can to reduce the numbers and even have the president impose regulations, but still people just ignore those regulations,” he said.

“Others walk without masks, lots, lots of meetings, street beating. People carry coolers, sit on the sidewalk, cars block the road.”
