The four South African franchises contemplating the new Rainbow Cup horizon are likely to have extremely mixed emotions about the prospect of quickly meeting Leinster, the heavyweights of the Celtic nation, in the competition.

On one side of the spectrum, anyone from the SA quartet (Bulls, Sharks, Stormers and Lions) draws them into the league phase of the six-round tournament (plus the final), which begins around April 24. it would amount to a quick and especially tantalizing examination of the overall ability of our country’s teams to compete with the best teams from Ireland, in particular, in addition to Scotland, Wales and Italy.

However, a different point of view would be that, ideally, Leinster would be best avoided until a possible reunion in the masterpiece between the top two finishers in the 16-team table, scheduled for the weekend of June 19.
