JOHANNESBURG – The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said on Saturday it would write to Scopa to step in and do more to hold the Department of Public Enterprises accountable for SAA’s failure to produce financial statements.
This comes after SAA technical staff were not paid while Air Chefs staff have not been paid since March last year.
After failing to pay salaries on March 27, SAA’s technical management promised payments on April 1, but did not comply and has not provided any explanation or direction regarding a resolution since then.
Air Chefs workers have had to rely on the temporary help plan for government employees from March last year to October due to non-payment of wages, while SAA Technical workers have had to fend for themselves .
SAA was placed under a corporate bailout about two years ago due to mismanagement that left it in dire straits.
Numsa spokeswoman Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said the Department of Public Enterprises has failed the workers: “DPE did not make provisions in the subsidiaries in the business rescue plan and what is worse, it has not lifted a finger to ensure workers are cared for while SAA’s business rescue plan is underway. “
Hlubi-Majola said the department misled SAA workers: “DPE ignored Numsa and SACCA last year when unions drastically raised the lack of allocation of funds for subsidiaries during commitments, we were having the consultative forum with them leadership”.
Numsa has instructed its attorneys to take the necessary steps
