Over 1 million rand raised to pay doctor’s medical bills currently in hospital with Covid-19

Over 1 million rand has already been donated to pay for medical bills for Dr. Sindi van Zyl, who has been hospitalized with Covid-19.

The well-known doctor tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19, earlier in the year and was admitted to hospital in February after having trouble breathing.

News24 reported that, as of early April, Van Zyl was still hospitalized and on a ventilator.

“She has suffered from various complications related to an extended ICU stay, and we need more funds to pay for her hospital stay until her lungs can cope without the ventilator,” her husband, Marinus van Zyl, said in a brief statement on the fundraising page.

According to Marinus, hospital and medical costs have already amounted to 1.5 million rand.

Projected ongoing weekly costs range from R150,000 to R200,000 per week in ICU.

By April 3, a total of R1 016 644 had already been donated to the Van Zyl family trust.

The goal is R2 million.
