Jonathan Ball, who founded the publishing house that bears his name in 1976, died of cancer in Cape Town.

He was 69 years old.

Eugene Ashton, CEO of Jonathan Ball Publishers, confirmed Ball’s death to News24.

When asked for a comment, Ashton said: “Jon hated sound bites. But we will miss him.”

Ball shook the political establishment in 1978 when he published the controversial book The super Afrikaners, which exposed the extent to which a secret organization influenced South African society.

He was surrounded by his children when he died, shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Jonathan Ball Publishers and News24 are subsidiaries of Media24.

This is a developing story.
