TOULOUSE – The family of a woman who died of a blood clot at the age of 38 after receiving the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine filed a complaint with prosecutors in southwestern France, a lawyer said Friday.

The complaint was filed “against X”, without addressing any individual or entity at this stage, a practice allowed in France when the circumstances of a case are still unclear.

The aim of filing the complaint with prosecutors in the city of Toulouse is “to obtain an investigation,” French family lawyer Etienne Boittin told AFP.

“It is a complaint ‘against X’, because we have no evidence against a person named for involuntary manslaughter,” Boittin said, adding that this “classification may evolve” as the case develops.

The woman’s family, a social worker, “is not in the process of claiming or seeking responsibilities but simply wants explanations and clarifications about what happened,” he added.

The woman, who was vaccinated in mid-March due to her work in a center for the disabled, did not suffer from any particular health problems, Boittin added.

Her health deteriorated shortly after the vaccination and she was hospitalized. He died on March 29 of a blood clot in the brain.

“The objective of this complaint is to obtain an additional investigation, in particular an autopsy in a medico-legal framework, to find out if this vaccine could have had a causal role in his death,” added the lawyer.

France and several other European countries resumed vaccines against AstraZeneca last month after briefly discontinuing the product due to reports of blood clots in a small number of people who had the vaccine.

The French drug regulator recommends the vaccine for people over 55 after reports of blood clots in younger people.

Neighboring Germany’s vaccine commission said this week that it recommended the use of the jab only for people 60 and older.

The vaccine has been endorsed by the World Health Organization and the EU drug regulator, who have said there is no evidence of a link to an increased risk of blood clots.

The same lawyer also represents the family of a French medical student who died days after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca in the western city of Nantes.

Prosecutors opened an investigation into that case and emphasized that no link to the jab had yet been established.
