JOHANESBURG – “It is the last day of service for more than 600 SABC employees”. That’s what made SABC news anchor Desiree Chauke cry on Wednesday when she read the story about the completed cuts from the public broadcaster.

More than 600 employees at SABC were laid off after the board announced last year that it would undergo a reduction process to try to cut its annual salary bill of R2.4 billion from 3,167 employees.

Chauke was reading his newsletter when he collapsed.

“… That [SABC] will move to a new structure starting April 1 … I apologize for not being able to finish that, can I ask my producers to take a break? ”.

Meanwhile, the hashtag #SABCRetrenchments began to be a trend on Twitter, as it would be the last day of the more than 600 workers at the public station.
