The General Fuel and Road Accidents Fund levies will take effect in April.
The Automobile Association (AA) expects a further considerable rise in fuel prices in April.
The fuel price for April is expected to be in the region of R17.32 per liter for ULP 95 inland. The previous high was R17.08 set at the end of 2018.
Commenting Tuesday on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund, the AA said gasoline will see a massive increase of 73 cents per liter, an increase of 39 cents for diesel and 37 cents for paraffin lighting.
In addition, the additional 27 cents to the General Fuel and Road Accident Fund levies announced by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni in February will take effect in April and will add additional costs to each liter of fuel purchased, in addition to the higher monthly adjustment.
Taking into account the increase in taxes, the AA predicts that gasoline could rise up to R1 per liter and diesel by 66 cents per liter. The charges do not add to the cost of paraffin lighting. “With the rate increases, motorists, starting in April, will pay R5.96 per liter of fuel at the GFL and RAF rates, or between 35% and 40% tax for each liter purchased,” said the AA. in a statement.
“The minor relief from the decline in oil and the exchange rate will be a cold comfort to South Africans reeling from the continued economic damage that is being inflicted as a result of Covid-19 and a decade of economic decline. Fuel prices will have widespread negative consequences for everyone in the country, not just motorists. “
The AA does not regulate or adjust fuel prices in SA, nor does it have any input on how fuel prices are calculated. Fuel prices are officially calculated and adjusted on the first Wednesday of each month by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
