JOHANNESBURG – The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have raided all three Fort Hare University campuses as part of an investigation into allegations of fraud.
The crime fighting unit raided several locations in Bisho, East London and Alice while investigating student admissions fraud, corruption and money laundering activities allegedly by fugitive professor Edwin Ijeoma.
Ijeoma is accused of irregularly registering students, including Eastern Cape Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane, and defrauding the university out of 5 million rand for incomplete and unauthorized academic programs for the provincial government.
“The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Team conducted a search and seizure operation at all Fort Hare branches. The operation is a means of gathering evidence for investigative purposes. No arrests have been made as of yet. as the investigation is still continuing, “he said. Hawks spokeswoman Yolisa Mgolodela.
