Cape Town – Two suspects found in possession of Barrydale retiree Erna Gericke’s car will appear in local magistrates court on one count of motor vehicle theft.
Gericke’s body was found after she went for a walk and did not return.
The two were found in possession of Gericke’s car that he parked at Rondomskrik, a popular parking spot for hikers. Gericke went out for a walk around 2 p.m. Sunday. Her husband reported her missing when he did not return home around 6 p.m.
Police spokesman Malcolm Pojie said a search began shortly after that included various police units and community members.
“Between 02:00 and 03:00 on Monday, members of the search party, which included the missing person’s daughter, found the seriously injured Gericke approximately five to six kilometers on the Waterfall hiking trail,” he said. Pojie.
He said paramedics declared the victim dead. An autopsy of the body was expected yesterday to determine the cause of death.
The Rev. Olivier Muller of the Dutch Reformed Church said Gericke was found on a trail to the falls, claiming that the person who examined her expressed a suspicion that it was probably an accident.
“Currently, no crime was suspected,” Pojie said.
He said the police followed up on information about the deceased car, which was no longer in the parking lot.
“Members noted possible signs of a breakdown that led members to believe that the car was possibly stolen. Through the surveillance of the farm surveillance and rural security structures, information about the whereabouts of the car was transmitted, ”he said.
Pojie said that after further investigation, police and the community found the car abandoned behind a hill near Tradouwhoek with the right front window broken.
“After the discovery, two suspects aged 18 and 24 from a farm in the area were arrested. The spare keys were found in the possession of one of the suspects who links them to the theft of the motor vehicle, ”he said.
Charles Payne, president of Barrydale Crime Watch and Community Police Forum, said he was not going to attempt to contradict the police statement because there was an ongoing investigation.
Payne said yes, Gericke went out for a walk up one of the hiking trails up the mountain to the waterfall after lunchtime Sunday, and his body was found in very bad shape, early Monday morning.
Swellendam Township Chief Communications Officer Bianca McKechnie said the scene was unfortunately still under investigation and until police have confirmed the information for public release, they are also unable to comment on the matter.
