  • Western Cape Police arrested a man who was in possession of the weapon that was allegedly used to kill investigator Charl Kinnear last year.
  • The man had been hiding in a flat in Elsie’s River, a suburb near where Kinnear was killed.
  • It is alleged that he attempted to drop the weapon while fleeing.

Police arrested a man who was in possession of the firearm allegedly used in the murder of Anti-Gang Unit detective Charl Kinnear in Cape Town.

The man had been hiding in an apartment in Elsie’s River, a suburb located near the home of Bishop Lavis of Kinnear, where he was assassinated in September last year.

During Friday night’s arrest, the man allegedly threw the gun onto a roof while trying to flee from police, emerged in information in a crime report that was submitted to Western Cape police chiefs.

The operation involved the national organized crime task force, members of the task force, the Hawks and the Anti-Gang Unit.

During Friday’s operation, a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition in the magazine and a small bag of tik was recovered.

The crime report indicated that the suspect was a member of a Cape Town gang.

Sources close to the investigation, who have knowledge of the city’s underworld, confirmed the arrest.

Rugby player turned private investigator Zane Kilian is in custody in connection with Kinnear’s murder.

It is alleged that he tracked Kinnear through his cell phone for months.

The arrest was part of a larger firearms bust in Cape Town.

Police spokesman Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale said late Friday that police were tracking a suspect in Avonwood, Elsies River.

“Upon arrival at the address, they saw a suspect with a firearm in hand. He fled in an effort to evade arrest, but the police caught up with him.

“The 39-year-old suspect is facing charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, ammunition and drugs,” Mogale said.
