Four people were arrested after crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated 6.5 million rand was found hidden in a lion sculpture bound for Australia, Gauteng police said on Friday.
A K9 Unit dog named Buddy sniffed at the shipment, said police spokesman Capt. Kay Makhubele.
The drugs were found in a warehouse in Jet Park near the OR Tambo International Airport.
Detectives and members of the West Rand K9 unit on Thursday night operationalized information on an alleged drug shipment bound for Australia and activated the service dog K9 Buddy. The sniffer dog reacted positively to the contents of the drug shipment. Further investigation confirmed that the statue contained 22 kg of hidden crystal meth drugs with an estimated street value of R6.5 million. “

In another incident, police intercepted a vehicle in Douglasdale and seized drugs with an estimated street value of R3 million. Two people were arrested.
They were expected to appear soon in different magistrates’ courts.
