Google outage in South Africa

The South Africans took social media Wednesday night to complain that they can’t access Google services, including search, Maps, YouTube, and Gmail.

Downdetector.co.za reported that there are problems at Google while its global counterpart, Downdetector.com, only reported that there were potential problems. Similar services, such as outage.report, suggested that other southern African countries may have been affected as well.

MyBroadband tests suggested that Google search started working in Chrome, while YouTube and Gmail were still unavailable.

Google services could be accessed through a VPN, like Tor.

The outage appeared to start around 7:50 p.m. and as of 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Google services in South Africa began to come back online, although there were still isolated complaints of downtime at the time of publication.
