Firefighters continue to fight the mountain fires near Stellenbosch, which started a week ago and burned about 13,600 hectares of vegetation.
The fire has spread to very high ground, mostly inaccessible, the Cape Winelands municipality said Sunday.
“The incident command team reported that the night was calm, with good progress in certain areas, despite a major outbreak that occurred just before sunset last night in the Jonkershoek Valley, just above Lanzerac. rapid deployment of resources allowed rapid containment, “the municipality said in a statement.
Fire suppression teams would be deployed to critical points in accessible areas of Jonkershoek, where they would continue with outbreak management, monitoring and clean-up operations.
Operations will continue overnight on Sunday and Monday.
“Teams are being replaced by new teams this morning [Sunday]. The hot weather forecast for today will be a challenge for firefighters and ground crews as it encourages flare-ups and heat exhaustion. The wind is forecast to pick up speed in the late afternoon and the effect of this will be closely monitored. “
Two firefighters are in the hospital after being injured.
